How does this calculator work?
WHIP = (Walks + Hits) ÷ Innings Pitched. A WHIP under 1.00 is elite; 1.00–1.15 is very good; 1.15–1.30 is average for a starting pitcher. Enter walks, hits, and innings pitched to calculate WHIP and see where the pitcher falls on the MLB performance scale.

How this is calculated
WHIP measures how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning, combining two of the most reliable predictors of future runs scored: walks (which a pitcher fully controls) and hits (partially controlled through strikeout rate and the defence behind them). Unlike ERA, WHIP is not affected by whether those baserunners actually score, making it a better measure of a pitcher's pure run-prevention ability independent of run support or bullpen quality.
MLB benchmarks (modern era, 2010–2024 approximate): a WHIP below 1.00 is elite and rare — only the best starters in a given season achieve it. Between 1.00 and 1.15 is excellent; 1.15–1.30 is average for a rotation starter; above 1.40 often signals poor performance or injury.
Innings pitched are traditionally recorded in thirds — "6.1" means 6 innings and 1 out (= 6.333 actual innings). This calculator accepts the standard decimal notation (6.1 = 6 and 1 out). Home runs allowed and unearned runs do not appear in WHIP, which is its main limitation: two pitchers with the same WHIP may allow very different run totals depending on home-run rate.
Frequently asked questions
For a starting pitcher, a WHIP below 1.00 is exceptional, 1.00–1.15 is very good, 1.15–1.30 is average, and above 1.40 is below average. Relievers can sustain lower WHIPs because they face smaller samples and do not face a lineup multiple times. All-time great starters (Pedro Martínez, Clayton Kershaw) have career WHIPs near or below 1.00.
WHIP counts home runs as hits, so they are included in the numerator. However, WHIP does not directly measure run-prevention efficiency — a pitcher who allows many solo home runs may have a similar WHIP to one who allows many singles but strand runners. For a more complete view, combine WHIP with ERA, FIP, and home-run rate.
Innings pitched are recorded in thirds of an inning: one out = 0.1, two outs = 0.2, three outs (one full inning) = 1.0. So 7 innings and 2 outs is entered as 7.2. The calculator converts these correctly: 7.2 means 7 + 2/3 = 7.667 actual innings.
