How does this calculator work?

Baseball batting average = Hits ÷ At-bats (e.g. 45 ÷ 150 = .300, an excellent average). Cricket average = Total runs ÷ Dismissals (50+ is world-class). Neither counts walks or not-out innings respectively. A .250 baseball average and a 35 cricket average are both roughly league-level benchmarks.

How this is calculated

In baseball, batting average (BA) is the ratio of hits to official at-bats, expressed as a three-decimal number (e.g. .300). Walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifice flies do not count as at-bats, so they do not affect the average. A batting average of .300 or higher is considered excellent at the professional level; the league average typically sits around .250 for Major League Baseball.

In cricket, batting average is calculated differently: total runs scored divided by the number of times dismissed. Innings where the batsman was not out are excluded from the denominator, which means a player who scores consistently and is never dismissed carries a theoretically infinite average. International-level batsmen with averages above 50 are considered world-class; an average of 40–49 is very good, and 30–39 is solid.

Both metrics reward consistency: a batter who gets on base or scores runs regularly every game accumulates a higher average than one who has a few exceptional performances surrounded by failures. Neither metric captures power hitting (home runs, sixes) — look to slugging percentage or strike rate for that.

Frequently asked questions

In MLB, .300 is the traditional benchmark for an excellent hitter, .270–.299 is above average, .250 is roughly league average, and anything below .220 typically puts a job at risk. In amateur leagues averages run higher because pitching quality varies.

In Test cricket, a career average above 50 is world-class (Bradman's 99.94 remains the benchmark). Averages of 40–49 are very good, 30–39 solid for middle-order batters, and below 20 is typical for tailenders. In T20, lower averages are expected due to higher risk-taking.

Walks (base on balls) are credited to the pitcher, not the batter, so they are excluded from both hits and at-bats in the BA formula. On-base percentage (OBP) does count walks and gives a fuller picture of how often a batter reaches base.
