EU shoe sizes follow the French/Continental Paris point system, where each size unit equals 2/3 cm of insole length. US sizes use a different historical scale, so a fixed numerical offset converts between them: EU = US + 33 for men's, and EU = US + 31 for women's. UK sizes are very close to US but shifted slightly downward: UK = US − 0.5 for men, and UK = US − 1.5 for women.
To estimate foot length, the EU insole length (EU size × 2/3 cm) gives the inside measurement of the shoe. Subtracting roughly 1.5 cm of toe room built into the construction gives an approximate actual foot length in centimetres; dividing by 2.54 converts to inches.
These offsets are the widely-used standard averages for both athletic and casual footwear. In practice, fit can vary by ±0.5 size between brands and shoe lasts (width, toe-box shape). Always check the brand's specific size guide when ordering footwear online, especially for dress shoes or technical footwear where sizing conventions diverge.

A US men's size 10 converts to EU 43 (10 + 33 = 43). A US women's size 10 converts to EU 41 (10 + 31 = 41). Always check the brand's size chart — some brands run half a size differently from the standard offset.
EU sizes describe the same insole length regardless of gender — EU 39 is the same physical measurement for men and women. The gender difference appears only in the US conversion offset: women's US sizes are ~1.5–2 sizes smaller than men's for the same EU, so the formula adds 31 (women) vs 33 (men).
EU sizes do support half sizes (e.g. 42.5), though they are less common in European retail than in the US market. A US 9.5 men's converts to EU 42.5, and a US 8 women's converts to EU 39. If a brand only offers whole EU sizes, round to the nearest and try both — or use your foot length measurement to find the best match.
