How does this calculator work?
EU shoe sizes use 2/3 cm insole increments. Convert with EU = US + 33 (men) or EU = US + 31 (women). UK = US − 0.5 (men) or US − 1.5 (women). Foot length ≈ EU × 2/3 cm − 1.5 cm. Fit can vary ±0.5 size by brand, so always check the brand's own size chart.

How this is calculated
EU shoe sizes use the French/Continental (Paris point) system, where one unit equals 2/3 cm of insole length. The US system uses a different scale, resulting in a roughly fixed offset: EU ≈ US + 33 for men's and EU ≈ US + 31 for women's. UK sizes are close to US but shifted by half a size for men (US − 0.5) or 1.5 sizes for women (US − 1.5).
To estimate foot length, the formula starts from the shoe's insole: EU size × (2/3 cm) gives the insole length, and subtracting about 1.5 cm accounts for the average toe room built into the shoe, giving an approximate foot length in centimetres and inches.
These conversions are widely-used standard approximations. Actual fit varies by brand, last shape and manufacturing tolerances — the result is a strong starting point, but always check a brand's specific size chart when ordering online, and try shoes on when possible.
Frequently asked questions
The EU system uses Paris points (2/3 cm increments of insole length), while the US system uses its own historical scale measured in barleycorns (1/3 inch). The two scales don't share the same starting point, so a fixed numerical offset — roughly +33 for men, +31 for women — converts between them.
EU sizes themselves are not gender-specific — EU 38 describes the same insole length regardless of gender. The gender difference appears only in the US offset: women's US sizes run about 1.5–2 sizes smaller than men's for the same EU size, so the offset is +31 for women vs +33 for men.
The estimate (EU × 2/3 cm − 1.5 cm) is a rough average. Shoe makers build in 1–2 cm of toe room, and the exact allowance varies by style (running shoes run longer, dress shoes shorter). Use it as a guide for online shopping, then verify against the brand's specific size chart.
