How does this calculator work?
T9 maps digits 2–9 to groups of letters (2→ABC, 3→DEF, … 9→WXYZ). Press each key once and predictive software matches the sequence to dictionary words. The total possible combinations = product of letter-counts per digit; for "4663" that is 3×3×3×3 = 81 combinations, including GOOD, HOME, and GONE.

How this is calculated
T9 was developed in 1994 and licensed widely for feature phones before smartphones became ubiquitous. The standard keypad assigns groups of letters to digits 2–9 following the ITU-T E.161 layout: 2 → ABC, 3 → DEF, 4 → GHI, 5 → JKL, 6 → MNO, 7 → PQRS, 8 → TUV, 9 → WXYZ. The digit 0 produces a space and 1 maps to punctuation characters.
In "multi-tap" mode (the older non-predictive style), you press a key repeatedly to cycle through its letters — once for the first letter, twice for the second, and so on. In T9 predictive mode, you press each key once and the phone's software matches the digit sequence against an internal word dictionary to predict the intended word. For example, "4663" could be GOOD, HOME, or GONE depending on which letters are selected from each key group.
This converter shows the "first-letter" primary mapping (one press per key, first letter in each group) and, for sequences up to 4 digits long, lists all possible character combinations — the full set that a T9 dictionary would draw from. The bar chart shows how many letter options each key press in your sequence contributes.
Frequently asked questions
T9's dictionary assigns the most likely word to each digit sequence based on word frequency in its language database. If two different words share the same digit sequence (called a "T9 conflict" or "textonym") — for example, "GOOD" and "HOME" both map to 4663 on the standard keypad — the phone displays the most common word first. You press * or # to cycle to the next match. Less common words may not be in the dictionary at all, requiring manual multi-tap entry.
In multi-tap (also called ABC mode), you press a key repeatedly to select a specific letter — one press for the first letter, two for the second, and so on, with a pause between letters on the same key. T9 lets you press each key exactly once and uses a word-prediction algorithm to guess the intended word from all possible combinations. T9 is significantly faster for common words in the dictionary.
For most 4-digit sequences there are between 1 and a few dozen real dictionary words out of up to 81 total letter combinations (for four keys with 3 letters each). Famous T9 conflicts include GOOD/HOME/GONE (4663), COLD/BOLD/COME (2663), and OF/ME (63). Longer sequences have more combinations but fewer real words that match all of them.
