How does this calculator work?

Each letter is assigned its position in the alphabet: A=1, B=2, … Z=26. This calculator maps every letter in your text to its number, then sums and averages the values. "HELLO" gives H=8, E=5, L=12, L=12, O=15, sum=52, average=10.4.

How this is calculated

The standard A=1 through Z=26 cipher assigns each letter of the English alphabet a number equal to its ordinal position. Only the 26 Latin letters are mapped — spaces, digits, and punctuation are silently skipped. Accented characters (é, ñ, ü, etc.) are also ignored; to handle them, strip the accent and enter the base letter manually.

The word sum (also called numerological value or Pythagorean number) adds all the individual letter values together. For example, "CAT" gives C=3, A=1, T=20, sum=24. The average is simply the word sum divided by the letter count. Uppercase and lowercase letters map to the same values.

Note that this tool uses the simple ascending mapping only. Some numerology traditions use a different letter-to-number assignment (e.g. Chaldean or reduced numerology), so results may differ from those systems.

Add the number value of every letter in the word (ignoring spaces and punctuation). For "HELLO": H=8, E=5, L=12, L=12, O=15 → sum = 8+5+12+12+15 = 52.

Yes — simply reverse the mapping: 1→A, 2→B, … 26→Z. Numbers outside 1–26 do not correspond to a letter in this standard scheme.
