Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Multiply steps by stride length (0.415 × height in metres for males, 0.413 for females) to get distance in metres; divide by 1,609.344 for miles. Calories ≈ 3.5 × weight (kg) × walking time (hours). At 10,000 steps an average-height adult covers roughly 7 km / 4.3 miles.

Formula
Stride (m) = 0.415 × height [male] or 0.413 [female] · Miles = steps × stride / 1609.344 · Calories = 3.5 × weight (kg) × time (h)
How this is calculated

Stride length scales with height: Hatano (1993) and subsequent pedometry studies established multipliers of 0.415 for males and 0.413 for females based on average body proportions. Multiplying your step count by your stride length gives distance in metres; dividing by 1,609.344 converts to miles, and dividing by 1,000 gives kilometres.

Calorie burn uses MET 3.5 (moderate walking at ~5 km/h / 3.1 mph). Walking time is estimated from distance and that speed, then fed into the formula kcal = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours). Faster walking, carrying a load or climbing hills raises actual calorie burn; a slow stroll burns slightly less.

At 10,000 steps (a widely cited daily activity target), a 170 cm adult walks roughly 7 km / 4.3 miles. Real-world results vary with footwear, terrain, fatigue and individual gait — this calculator gives a close population-average estimate from step count alone. For precise tracking use a GPS watch or calibrated pedometer.

Frequently asked questions

For an average adult (≈ 170 cm / 5'7"), roughly 2,100–2,200 steps per mile. Taller people need fewer steps; shorter people need more. Enter your height for a personalised figure.

Research associates 7,000–10,000 daily steps with reduced all-cause mortality and cardiovascular risk in adults. Health benefits plateau in that range. Even 4,000–5,000 daily steps shows meaningful improvement over a sedentary lifestyle.

Leg length determines natural stride, and leg length scales proportionally with height. The small male/female difference reflects average leg-to-height ratio differences. If you have a measured stride length from a GPS device, you can use it to back-calculate exact steps-per-mile figures.
