How does this calculator work?

Cycling speed (km/h) equals distance divided by time in hours; pace (min/km) is total time in minutes divided by distance. A 40 km ride in 1 h 30 min gives 26.7 km/h and a pace of 2:15 min/km. The projected finish times for 10, 20, 40 and 100 km assume the same steady pace throughout.

How this is calculated

Cycling speed and pace are two sides of the same measurement. Speed expresses distance per unit of time (km/h or mph) while pace flips it to show time per unit of distance (min/km or min/mi). Given any distance in kilometres and any total time in hours plus minutes, the calculator divides distance by time in hours to get speed, then inverts speed to get pace.

The pace per kilometre is converted to pace per mile by multiplying by 1.609 344 (the exact kilometres-per-mile conversion). All four figures (km/h, mph, min/km, min/mi) represent the same average effort — use whichever unit matches your head unit, training app or event description.

The distance-projection bars show how long your current pace would take you to cover four benchmark cycling distances: 10 km (short sprint or commute), 20 km (typical club loop), 40 km (common sportive or gran fondo lap) and 100 km (century ride). These projections assume a perfectly constant pace and flat terrain; in practice fatigue, hills, wind and stops all alter the result — treat longer projections as optimistic targets.

Frequently asked questions

It depends heavily on terrain, bike type and fitness. A beginner on a flat route typically averages 18–24 km/h; a regular recreational rider 24–30 km/h; a trained club rider 30–40 km/h; a professional racer 40–50 km/h. Mountain biking and commuting speeds are lower. Use this calculator to track your personal improvement rather than comparing absolute numbers.

Divide 60 by the pace in min/km. A pace of 2:30 min/km (2.5 min/km) gives a speed of 60 ÷ 2.5 = 24 km/h. Alternatively, the calculator shows both automatically once you enter distance and time.

GPS units typically exclude paused time (traffic lights, coffee stops) from the moving average while including it in the elapsed-time average. This calculator uses the total time you enter, which matches the elapsed-time average. Enter only your moving time if you want to compare with your device's moving-average figure.
