How does this calculator work?
Ski length ≈ height × 0.80–0.87 for beginners, × 0.87–0.94 for intermediates, × 0.94–1.00 for advanced skiers. Subtract ~5 cm for park, add ~5 cm for powder, add ~10 cm for racing. Ski poles ≈ height × 0.68. Always demo skis in the computed range — individual fit and brand sizing vary.

Ski length is primarily driven by body height and scaled by ability level and skiing style. Beginners benefit from shorter skis (roughly 80–87% of height): they are easier to pivot and control at lower speeds on groomed runs. Intermediate skiers step into a mid-range (87–94% of height) that balances agility with stability at higher speeds. Advanced and expert skiers use longer skis (94–100% of height) for edge grip and high-speed performance on challenging terrain.
Ski style shifts the length within that range. Park and freestyle skiers trim about 5 cm off the all-mountain recommendation — shorter skis are easier to spin and press in the terrain park. Powder and off-piste skiers add about 5 cm for extra float on deep snow. Racing slalom and giant-slalom skis are the longest (up to 10+ cm over height) because race courses demand maximum edge contact at high speed.
Ski pole length is estimated at roughly 68% of body height — the elbow-to-floor rule: grip the pole below the basket, place the tip on the floor, and your elbow should form a 90° angle. These figures are manufacturer guidelines as of 2025 and are starting points; boot height, binding plate thickness and personal preference all shift the optimal length slightly. Always test-ski in your computed range before buying.

Beginners should size down — skis that are too long are significantly harder to turn and control, while slightly short skis still perform well. Advanced skiers can size up if they prioritise stability, speed or powder performance. When in doubt, demo both sizes before purchasing; many shops offer demo rental programmes for this purpose.
Weight primarily influences ski flex index rather than length. Heavier or more aggressive skiers need a stiffer ski to prevent the tips washing out under load — ask your shop about the flex rating. For length, height and ability remain the primary factors. Width (waist width in mm) also matters for terrain type.
Stand barefoot on a flat surface and measure to the top of your head in centimetres. Use your height without boots — the formula already accounts for typical boot height. Ski manufacturers publish their own size charts using the same barefoot height measurement, so no adjustment is needed.
