value_to = value_from x (toBase_from / toBase_to), with base unit = watt
How this is calculated

Power measures how fast energy is transferred or work is done. The SI unit is the watt (W), defined as one joule of energy per second. Every unit in this tool is defined by a fixed conversion factor relating it to the watt: a kilowatt is exactly 1000 W, a megawatt is 1,000,000 W, a mechanical horsepower is 745.6999 W, a metric horsepower (PS) is 735.49875 W, a BTU per hour is about 0.293071 W, and a foot-pound per second is about 1.35582 W.

To convert, the entered value is first multiplied by its source factor (toBase_from) to express it in watts, then divided by the target factor (toBase_to) to land in the chosen unit. Equivalently, the result equals the input times the ratio toBase_from / toBase_to, so converting and then converting back returns the original number.

The factors are exact physical definitions, so the only loss of precision comes from the constants for horsepower, BTU/h and ft-lb/s, which are rounded. Results assume steady (instantaneous) power, not energy over time, and the converter does not account for efficiency, power factor, or peak-versus-average distinctions.

About this calculator

Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or work is done, measured in watts (joules per second) in the SI system. Engines and motors are often rated in horsepower — either the mechanical horsepower (745.7 W) common in the US, or the metric horsepower (735.5 W) used in Europe.

This converter uses the watt as its base unit. One kilowatt equals 1000 watts, one mechanical horsepower equals about 745.7 W, and one BTU per hour equals about 0.293 W. It is useful for HVAC, automotive and electrical calculations.

Frequently asked questions

One mechanical horsepower equals about 745.7 watts; one metric horsepower equals about 735.5 watts.

Divide kilowatts by 0.7457 (or multiply by about 1.341) to get mechanical horsepower.

Mechanical (imperial) horsepower is 745.7 W, while metric horsepower (PS) is 735.5 W — about 1.4% smaller.
