Formula
value_to = value_from x (toBase_from / toBase_to), with base unit = newton
How this is calculated

Force is converted through a single base unit: the newton (N), the SI unit defined as the force that accelerates one kilogram of mass at one meter per second squared (1 N = 1 kg·m/s²). Each unit carries a fixed factor — toBase — equal to how many newtons it represents: kilonewton = 1000, dyne = 1e-5, pound-force = 4.4482216, kilogram-force = 9.80665 (exact, from standard gravity), and ounce-force = 0.27801385.

Conversion is two steps. First the input is multiplied by its source factor to express it in newtons: newtons = value_from x toBase_from. Then that newton value is divided by the target factor: value_to = newtons / toBase_to. Combined, value_to = value_from x (toBase_from / toBase_to), so any pair of units converts directly without rounding intermediate results.

The gravitational units (kgf, ozf) assume standard gravity g = 9.80665 m/s²; real local gravity varies slightly by latitude and altitude, so kgf/lbf readings can differ a little from true weight in the field. Pound-force and ounce-force use the international avoirdupois definitions. The math is linear and exact apart from the rounding applied when the result is displayed.

About this calculator

Force is a push or pull, measured in newtons in the SI system — one newton accelerates a one-kilogram mass at one meter per second squared. Engineering also uses kilogram-force and pound-force, which express the gravitational force on a given mass at standard gravity.

This converter uses the newton as its base unit. One pound-force equals about 4.4482 N, one kilogram-force equals exactly 9.80665 N (standard gravity), and one dyne is just 10^-5 N. It is handy for mechanics, structural design and physics problems.

Frequently asked questions

One pound-force equals approximately 4.4482 newtons.

A kilogram-force is the force exerted by gravity on one kilogram of mass at standard gravity, equal to 9.80665 newtons.

A dyne is 10^-5 newtons — the force needed to accelerate one gram at one centimeter per second squared.
