How does this calculator work?
OBP = (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF) — counts all ways of reaching base per plate appearance. SLG = (1B + 2×2B + 3×3B + 4×HR) / AB — weights hits by bases. OPS = OBP + SLG. MLB average OBP is ~.317; .400+ is elite. Enter your season stats to calculate all three using official MLB formulas.

How this is calculated
On-base percentage counts every way a batter can reach base from a plate appearance: a hit (H), a walk (BB, base on balls), or being hit by a pitch (HBP). The denominator adds at-bats, walks, HBP and sacrifice flies (SF) — sacrifice flies are included because they are official plate appearances that end the batter's turn, unlike sacrifice bunts. At-bats alone form the denominator for batting average (BA = H / AB).
Slugging percentage (SLG) weights hits by the number of bases earned: a single counts 1, a double 2, a triple 3 and a home run 4. It is computed as total bases divided by at-bats, giving a per-AB measure of extra-base power. Singles are inferred as H − 2B − 3B − HR; if extra-base hits exceed total hits the input is invalid.
OPS (on-base plus slugging) simply adds OBP and SLG, giving a single number that blends plate discipline with power. It is not a true percentage but an effective composite: an OPS of .800 is solid, .900 is very good, and 1.000+ is elite by major-league standards. The formula used here follows the official Major League Baseball definition.
Frequently asked questions
Batting average only counts hits in its numerator and at-bats in the denominator, ignoring walks and hit-by-pitches that also get a batter on base. OBP captures all ways of reaching base per plate appearance, making it a more complete measure of a batter's true offensive contribution. Research in sabermetrics (notably in Moneyball) showed that OBP correlates more strongly with run scoring than batting average.
In Major League Baseball (2024 season), the league-average OBP hovers around .317. An OBP above .360 is considered above-average, above .400 is excellent, and only the elite players sustain .400+ over a full season. Historical legends like Babe Ruth (.482 career OBP) and Ted Williams (.482) remain the all-time benchmarks.
