Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Divide mL by 4.929 for US teaspoons, by 5 for metric teaspoons, or by 5.919 for UK teaspoons. 15 mL = 3.04 US tsp ≈ 1 US tablespoon. 5 mL = 1 metric tsp. System choice matters — a UK tsp is 20% larger than a US tsp.

Formula
tsp = mL ÷ 4.929 (US) • tsp = mL ÷ 5 (metric) • tbsp = mL ÷ 14.787 (US)
How this is calculated

A teaspoon is a cooking-measure unit whose precise volume depends on the measurement system in use. In the United States, 1 teaspoon = 1/3 tablespoon = 1/6 fluid ounce = 4.92892159375 mL (derived from the US customary gallon). In metric countries, especially Australia and Canada, the teaspoon is rounded to exactly 5 mL for convenience in recipes. In the UK and other Imperial-system countries, 1 teaspoon ≈ 5.91939 mL (1/3 of an Imperial tablespoon). The differences matter in baking: a metric teaspoon of baking powder is about 1.5% more than a US one, and a UK teaspoon is about 20% more than a US one — errors that add up across a full recipe.

This calculator divides the volume in mL by the teaspoon size for the chosen system and also computes tablespoons, cups (where defined), microlitres and US fluid ounces for reference. The fraction bar shows the whole and fractional teaspoon breakdown to help with measuring.

Note that measuring spoons sold in a country are usually calibrated to that country's standard, but "teaspoon" in an older UK recipe might reference the Imperial size (≈5.92 mL) even if the spoon in the drawer is a modern 5 mL metric spoon. When in doubt, the metric 5 mL value is the safest default for modern cookware.

Frequently asked questions

Using US measurements: 15 ÷ 4.929 ≈ 3.04 US teaspoons (≈ 1 tablespoon). Using metric: 15 ÷ 5 = 3 metric teaspoons exactly (= 1 Australian tablespoon of 15 mL). The small difference between systems is why the recipe source matters.

No, but they are close. 1 metric teaspoon = 5 mL exactly; 1 US teaspoon ≈ 4.929 mL — about 1.4% less. For everyday cooking the difference is negligible, but for precise baking or pharmaceutical preparations, always specify which system you are using.

US: 100 ÷ 14.787 ≈ 6.76 tablespoons. Metric: 100 ÷ 20 = 5 tablespoons. UK: 100 ÷ 17.758 ≈ 5.63 tablespoons. The answer differs by up to 35% depending on the system.
