mL to µL Conversion Calculator — Millilitres to Microlitres
Convert millilitres (mL) to microlitres (µL) and other small volume units used in science, medicine and laboratory work. The relationship is exact: 1 mL = 1 000 µL = 1 000 000 nL = 1 000 000 000 pL.

How does this calculator work?
1 mL = 1,000 µL exactly (SI definition). Multiply mL by 1,000 to get µL, by 1,000,000 for nL, or by 10⁹ for pL. Divide mL by 1,000 for L. This is a simple powers-of-ten scale — no density or temperature is needed.
Formula
How this is calculated
The millilitre (mL) and microlitre (µL) are both SI-derived units of volume, related by a factor of exactly 1 000 by definition. The prefix "micro" (µ) means 10⁻⁶, so 1 µL = 10⁻⁶ L = 10⁻³ mL. Equivalently, 1 mL = 1 000 µL. Similarly, 1 nanolitre (nL) = 10⁻⁶ mL, giving 1 mL = 1 000 000 nL, and 1 picolitre (pL) = 10⁻⁹ mL, giving 1 mL = 10⁹ pL.
Microlitres are the standard unit in molecular biology (PCR reactions, pipette tips for p10 or p200 pipettes), analytical chemistry (HPLC injection volumes) and clinical diagnostics (capillary blood tests). A standard PCR reaction volume is often 20–50 µL; an HPLC injection might be 1–10 µL. Pipettes are calibrated in µL, and the conversion from mL on bottle labels is a constant source of error — always double-check whether a protocol uses mL or µL.
Because the conversion is a simple power-of-10 multiplication, no rounding or approximation is involved. The only practical limitation is the precision of your original measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Exactly 1 000 µL. This is an exact SI definition: 1 mL = 10⁻³ L and 1 µL = 10⁻⁶ L, so 1 mL ÷ 10⁻⁶ L = 1 000 µL. There is no rounding — this is precise.
Typical lab reactions (PCR, enzyme assays, ELISA) are performed in volumes of 10–200 µL. Expressing these as fractions of a millilitre (0.010–0.200 mL) is awkward and error-prone. µL avoids decimal points in the working range and matches standard micropipette calibration.
Divide by 1 000: mL = µL ÷ 1 000. For example, 250 µL = 0.250 mL. To convert to litres: L = µL ÷ 1 000 000.
