The millilitre (mL) and microlitre (µL) are both SI-derived units of volume, related by a factor of exactly 1 000 by definition. The prefix "micro" (µ) means 10⁻⁶, so 1 µL = 10⁻⁶ L = 10⁻³ mL. Equivalently, 1 mL = 1 000 µL. Similarly, 1 nanolitre (nL) = 10⁻⁶ mL, giving 1 mL = 1 000 000 nL, and 1 picolitre (pL) = 10⁻⁹ mL, giving 1 mL = 10⁹ pL.
Microlitres are the standard unit in molecular biology (PCR reactions, pipette tips for p10 or p200 pipettes), analytical chemistry (HPLC injection volumes) and clinical diagnostics (capillary blood tests). A standard PCR reaction volume is often 20–50 µL; an HPLC injection might be 1–10 µL.
