The Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the baseline calories a dog needs at rest in a thermoneutral environment — roughly equivalent to the basal metabolic rate. The standard veterinary formula, RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75, uses allometric scaling (the 0.75 exponent) to account for the fact that larger animals burn fewer calories per kilogram than smaller ones. This formula is endorsed by the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee and AAFCO.
The Daily Energy Requirement (DER) multiplies RER by a lifestyle factor that reflects the dog's activity level, reproductive status and life stage. A neutered adult dog (factor 1.6) needs about 60% more than its resting requirement; a working sled dog (factor 5+) may need five times the RER. Puppies under 4 months use a factor of 3.0 because growth requires substantial extra energy; this drops to 2.0 from 4 months until the dog reaches adult size.
