Dog BMI Calculator — Canine Body Mass Index

Enter your dog's weight and withers height to get a canine BMI — a quick tracking index. For clinical assessment, a Body Condition Score (BCS) from a vet is the standard.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Dog BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²), using the dog's withers height. Unlike human BMI there are no universal breed-specific ranges, so the result is best used to track one dog over time. A vet Body Condition Score (BCS 1–9) is the clinical standard for assessing canine body condition.

Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²) — same formula as human BMI, applied to the dog's withers height
How this is calculated

Canine BMI applies the standard body mass index formula — weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres — using the dog's withers height (from the ground to the top of the shoulders). The same formula underlies human BMI and gives a dimensionless index that tends to rise when a dog gains excess fat relative to its frame.

Unlike human BMI, there are no universally agreed canine BMI ranges. Dogs come in hundreds of breeds with dramatically different proportions: a Greyhound and a Basset Hound of the same weight and height have very different body compositions. The approximate range categories shown here (Underweight < 15, Lean/Ideal 15–22, Overweight 22–30, Obese > 30) are general guidance only, not breed-specific.

Veterinarians rely on the Body Condition Score (BCS), a 1–9 or 1–5 palpation-and-observation scale, rather than BMI for clinical decisions. Use this calculator to track your dog's index over time rather than to make feeding or health decisions — always consult a vet for those.

Frequently asked questions

Human BMI uses a single scale because adult humans are anatomically similar. Dogs span an extraordinary range of shapes — from a 1 kg Chihuahua to a 100 kg Great Dane — and many breeds have body proportions (long backs, short legs, deep chests) that make weight-to-height ratios poor proxies for body fat. BCS is preferred because it assesses visible ribs, waist tuck and other physical signs.

Measure from the ground to the withers — the highest point of the shoulder blades, just behind the neck. Have the dog stand on a flat surface with its head in a natural position. This is the standard way dog height is measured and is used in breed registries worldwide.

Yes — the Body Condition Score (BCS) evaluated by a vet or using a visual chart. At a healthy weight you should be able to feel (but not see) your dog's ribs with gentle pressure, and the dog should have a visible waist when viewed from above. Many veterinary clinics offer free weight checks.
