How this is calculated

The number of servings a cake yields depends on its cross-sectional footprint divided by the area of a single serving. Serving area is the width × depth of each slice: a standard party slice is 2" wide × 1" deep into the cake (2 in²); a wedding slice is 1" × 1" = 1 in²; a generous dessert cut is 2" × 2" = 4 in². For a round cake the footprint is π × (d/2)²; for square and rectangular cakes it is simply l × w.

This approach closely matches the industry-standard Wilton serving chart: a 9-inch round gives floor(π × 4.5² / 2) = floor(31.8) = 31 party servings (Wilton says 32), and a 9×13 sheet gives floor(117 / 2) = 58 (Wilton says 54–58). The floor() function ensures you never promise more slices than the cake can yield.

Note that this calculator estimates servings from one horizontal layer. For tiered or multi-layer cakes, calculate each tier separately and sum the results. It also assumes consistently cut slices — first and last cuts are often irregular in practice, so add a few extra servings as a buffer for important events.
