How does this calculator work?
Scale factor = new pan volume ÷ original pan volume. Round V = π(d/2)²h; rectangular V = l × w × h. Multiply every ingredient by the scale factor. A 9" round (2" deep) ≈ 127 in³; a 9×13" (2" deep) ≈ 234 in³ — so that substitution needs roughly twice the recipe.

What matters when substituting cake pans is total volume, not just footprint area — batter fills a pan to a specific depth, and a thinner fill bakes faster while a deeper fill bakes slower. This calculator computes the volume of each pan: round pans use V = π × (d/2)² × h; square and rectangular pans use V = l × w × h. The scale factor is simply new volume ÷ original volume — multiply every ingredient by that number to keep the batter depth (and thus bake time) as similar as possible.
A scale factor of 1.0 means the pans are equivalent and no adjustment is needed. A factor above 1 means the new pan is larger: more batter, thinner layer, potentially a few minutes less baking. A factor below 1 means less batter goes into a smaller pan, which fills more deeply and may need extra time. Always test with a toothpick; the exact time depends on your oven and batter type.
The calculator works in inches, matching the most common US baking specifications. For metric pans in centimetres, enter centimetre values directly — the scale factor is dimensionless and remains correct as long as both pans use the same unit.

A single 9-inch round (2" deep) has a volume of about 127 in³, while a 9×13-inch pan (2" deep) holds 234 in³ — nearly twice as large. You would need roughly double the recipe. A more common swap is two 9-inch rounds for one 9×13 sheet cake, which gives a similar total volume.
