World Cup Calorie Calculator
Find out how many calories a World Cup match burns — from watching quietly at home to playing a full 90-minute competitive game. Enter your weight and match duration to get an estimate based on MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities.

How does this calculator work?
Calories burned = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours). Watching at home burns ~1.3 kcal/kg/h; playing competitively burns ~10 kcal/kg/h. For a 75 kg person over 90 minutes that is ~146 kcal watching to ~1,125 kcal playing. Adjust duration for extra time. MET values from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities.
Formula
How this is calculated
The calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) system from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al.). One MET equals roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour — the energy rate at rest. Each scenario is assigned a MET multiplier: watching television seated carries about 1.3 METs, standing and cheering at a sports bar around 2.5 METs, attending the match at a stadium around 3.0 METs, while playing football recreationally is 7.0 METs and a competitive match is 10.0 METs.
Calories burned = MET × weight in kilograms × duration in hours. For a 75 kg person over 90 minutes this ranges from roughly 146 kcal seated at home to about 1,125 kcal playing competitively — nearly eight times more. The bar chart shows all five scenarios side by side so you can compare the energy cost of each for your weight and duration.
MET values are population averages from the 2011 Compendium. Actual calorie burn depends on individual fitness, match intensity, position played, weather, and terrain. Extra time and a penalty shootout can add 30 minutes or more — adjust the duration field accordingly to account for the full match length.
Frequently asked questions
A 75 kg person burns roughly 146 kcal watching seated at home (1.3 MET) to about 338 kcal standing and cheering at the stadium (3.0 MET) during a 90-minute match. Heavier people burn proportionally more.
A 75 kg player burns approximately 788 kcal in 90 minutes of recreational football (7.0 MET) or about 1,125 kcal in a competitive match (10.0 MET). Goalkeepers and central defenders typically run fewer kilometres than midfielders and burn somewhat fewer calories.
Yes — extend the duration field to 120 minutes for a match going to extra time, or to 135 minutes if a penalty shootout follows. Each extra 15 minutes at a competitive playing MET of 10 adds roughly 188 kcal for a 75 kg player.
