Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

1 Galleon = 17 Sickles = 493 Knuts (29 Knuts per Sickle). These are the canonical Harry Potter exchange rates from the books. J.K. Rowling estimated 1 Galleon ≈ £5 GBP as an informal approximation. Convert any combination of denominations by reducing to Knuts, then rebuilding.

Formula
1 Galleon = 17 Sickles = 493 Knuts • 1 Sickle = 29 Knuts
How this is calculated

The wizarding currency system in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series uses three denominations: gold Galleons, silver Sickles and bronze Knuts. The exchange rates are established canon, first stated in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997): there are 17 Sickles to a Galleon and 29 Knuts to a Sickle, giving 493 Knuts per Galleon. These are the only exchange rates ever published in the main series.

To convert any mixed amount, the calculator first converts everything to Knuts (the smallest unit), then decomposes the total back into the maximum number of Galleons, remaining Sickles, and leftover Knuts — the same process a Gringotts teller would follow. Fractional coins are not possible in the series (you cannot have half a Knut), so the calculator works in whole units; if you enter decimal values they are treated as continuous quantities.

J.K. Rowling once commented informally that a Galleon is worth approximately £5 GBP. This is not a fixed canonical rate (it was an off-the-cuff author estimate and the value of £5 has changed with inflation) but it is the most widely quoted approximation and is included here for fun context only.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — 17 Sickles per Galleon and 29 Knuts per Sickle (giving 493 Knuts per Galleon) are stated explicitly in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and confirmed throughout the series. They are the only canonical rates J.K. Rowling has published.

J.K. Rowling informally estimated 1 Galleon ≈ £5 GBP in a 2001 interview, giving Knuts a value of roughly £0.01 each. This was an approximate author's statement — not an official Wizarding World exchange rate — and is provided here purely as a fun reference.

29 is a prime number, which makes the currency system deliberately awkward to do mental arithmetic with — adding to the charm of a non-decimal magical monetary system. Whether J.K. Rowling chose it intentionally for that reason or simply liked the sound of it has never been confirmed.
