Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Enter a wage in any pay period plus your work schedule (hours/day, days/week, weeks/year). The calculator converts to all other pay periods using: annual = hourly × h/day × days/week × weeks/year. Apply an effective tax rate to estimate take-home pay.

Formula
Annual = hourly × hours/day × days/week × weeks/year • Net ≈ Gross × (1 − tax rate)
How this is calculated

Every wage figure can be converted to every other by anchoring on an hourly rate. The calculator first converts your input to an hourly figure using the work schedule you provide (hours/day, days/week, weeks/year), then multiplies out to daily, weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, monthly and annual totals.

The "semi-monthly" figure assumes exactly 24 pay periods per year (two per month × 12 months), which is subtly different from bi-weekly (26 pay periods × 2 weeks). This distinction matters because most salaried jobs pay semi-monthly, while most hourly contracts pay bi-weekly.

The net pay estimate subtracts a single flat effective tax rate from gross income. This is a simplification — real tax systems use progressive brackets, deductions, social contributions and jurisdiction-specific rules. Use the net figure as a rough planning estimate only; consult a tax professional or payroll system for accurate take-home amounts.

Frequently asked questions

Bi-weekly means paid every two weeks — 26 pay cheques per year. Semi-monthly means paid twice per calendar month (e.g. 1st and 15th) — exactly 24 pay cheques per year. Both use the same annual total; the per-cheque amount differs slightly. Hourly workers are usually paid bi-weekly; salaried workers are often paid semi-monthly.

The net figure uses your entered effective tax rate as a flat percentage applied to gross income. Real take-home pay also depends on pre-tax deductions (pension contributions, health insurance, FSA), progressive tax brackets, national insurance or social security, and local/state taxes. Use this calculator for ballpark comparisons, not payslip accuracy.

Enter the hourly rate, select "Hourly wage", set your expected hours and weeks, and read the annual figure. Note that as a contractor you typically receive no benefits (pension, holiday pay, health insurance), so your hourly rate needs to be higher than an equivalent salaried role to achieve the same real compensation.
