How does this calculator work?
Volume conversion works by expressing the input in liters (multiply by the source factor) then converting to the output unit (divide by the target factor). US and imperial units share names but differ by ~20%. The litre is the universal base: 1 L = 1000 mL = 0.001 m³ ≈ 0.2642 US gal.
Formula
How this is calculated
Every volume unit is defined by a fixed number of liters — its conversion factor. To convert between any two units, multiply the input by the source factor to express the value in liters, then divide by the target factor. In one step: result = value × fromFactor ÷ toFactor. For example, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L and 1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L, so 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 ÷ 4.54609 ≈ 0.8327 imperial gallons.
US and imperial units share names but differ in size. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL; an imperial fluid ounce is 28.41 mL. A US pint is 473 mL; an imperial pint is 568 mL. Always check which standard applies — recipes from the UK and the US use different volumes even when the label says "cup" or "pint".
Metric prefixes (milli, centi, deci) are powers of 10 relative to the liter. Cubic centimeters equal milliliters exactly (1 cm³ = 1 mL). Cubic feet (1 ft³ ≈ 28.317 L) and cubic inches (1 in³ ≈ 16.387 mL) are engineering units common in construction and HVAC.
Frequently asked questions
One US cup equals 236.588 milliliters. An imperial (UK) cup is 284.131 mL — about 20% larger. Always check which cup standard your recipe uses.
A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. An imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 liters — roughly 20% larger. This matters when comparing fuel economy or buying beverages across countries.
Yes — 1 cm³ = 1 mL exactly. This follows from the definition: a cube with 1 cm sides has a volume of exactly one milliliter. Both symbols appear on syringes and lab equipment interchangeably.
