How does this calculator work?
VO₂ max for runners is estimated from a Cooper 12-min run as (distance_m − 504.9) / 44.73, or from any race result via the Jack Daniels formula: VO₂max = (−4.60 + 0.182258·v + 0.000104·v²) / f(t), where v is race velocity in m/min and f(t) is the sustainable-effort fraction. Higher VO₂ max means greater aerobic capacity.

How this is calculated
VO₂ max (maximal oxygen uptake) is the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during exhaustive exercise, expressed in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). It is the most widely accepted single measure of aerobic fitness and closely predicts distance-running performance.
The Cooper 12-minute run test, developed by Dr. Kenneth Cooper in 1968, asks you to run as far as possible on flat ground in exactly 12 minutes. The resulting distance in metres goes into a linear regression fitted against laboratory VO₂ max measurements: VO₂max = (distance − 504.9) / 44.73. The test assumes a truly maximal effort.
The Daniels–Gilbert method (from Jack Daniels' "Running Formula") derives VO₂ max from any all-out race. It first computes the oxygen cost at your race velocity v (m/min): O₂cost = −4.60 + 0.182258·v + 0.000104·v². It then estimates the fraction of VO₂ max you can sustain for that race duration t (minutes): fraction = 0.8 + 0.1894585·e^(−0.1227·t) + 0.2989558·e^(−0.1932605·t). VO₂max = O₂cost / fraction. Longer races use a lower sustainable fraction. Both methods produce estimates — true VO₂ max requires a graded exercise test with gas analysis in a lab.
