How does this calculator work?
Vertical exaggeration VE = H / V, where H and V are the denominators of the horizontal and vertical scale ratios. VE > 1 makes terrain look steeper than it is. A 1:50 000 map paired with a 1:5 000 profile gives VE = 10; a 10% grade would appear as a 45° slope on that profile.

How this is calculated
A topographic cross-section or map profile uses two independent scales: a horizontal scale for distances along the ground and a vertical scale for elevations. When these scales differ, terrain appears either steeper or flatter than it actually is. Vertical exaggeration VE = H / V, where H is the horizontal scale denominator and V is the vertical scale denominator (both from 1:N notation).
For example, a 1:50 000 horizontal scale and a 1:5 000 vertical scale give VE = 10: a hill that rises 50 m over 500 m of horizontal distance (10% grade, ~5.7°) would appear as a 45° slope on the profile. VE > 1 means the vertical is stretched (terrain looks steeper); VE = 1 is a true-scale profile; VE < 1 is a compressed vertical (rare, used for very steep terrain).
The bar chart shows the ground distance represented by one map unit on each scale, making the size mismatch intuitive: the larger horizontal bar explains why even gentle slopes appear dramatic in exaggerated profiles. A VE of 10 is common for regional geological cross-sections; values of 2–5 are typical for engineering profiles of roads and railways.
Frequently asked questions
Most terrain features are much wider than they are tall. A true-scale profile of a mountain range would be nearly flat on the page. Vertical exaggeration stretches the y-axis to make slope, valley and ridge shapes visible, at the cost of making all angles appear steeper than they really are.
A slope of angle θ appears at angle arctan(VE × tan θ) on an exaggerated profile. At VE = 10, a gentle 5.7° slope (~10% grade) appears as 45°. Always report the VE on any profile so readers can interpret the apparent steepness correctly.
Longitudinal road and rail profiles commonly use VE = 5 to 10 (e.g. 1:2 000 horizontal and 1:200 vertical). Geological cross-sections may use VE = 5 to 50 depending on the depth and lateral extent of the section. Bathymetric and ocean-floor profiles often exceed VE = 100.
