How does this calculator work?
Upload time = File size (MB) × 8 ÷ Speed (Mbps). A 500 MB file at 10 Mbps takes 400 s (≈ 6 min 40 s); at 100 Mbps it takes 40 s. Real-world uploads are 10–20% slower than rated speed due to overhead and congestion — run a fresh speed test before estimating.

How this is calculated
Upload time depends on file size and available bandwidth. File size is measured in bytes (MB, GB, TB), while internet speeds are measured in bits per second (Mbps = megabits per second). Since 1 byte = 8 bits, you must multiply the file size in MB by 8 to convert to megabits before dividing by your speed in Mbps. The result is the upload time in seconds.
For example, a 500 MB video file at 10 Mbps: 500 × 8 = 4,000 megabits; 4,000 ÷ 10 = 400 seconds (about 6 min 40 s). The same file at 100 Mbps would take 40 seconds. This calculator uses 1 GB = 1,024 MB (binary) and 1 TB = 1,024 GB.
Important caveats: the calculated time assumes you sustain your full rated upload speed for the entire transfer. In practice, upload speeds fluctuate due to network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, TCP overhead and upload throttling by ISPs. Real-world uploads are typically 10–20% slower than the rated speed. For critical uploads, run a fresh speed test at the time of the upload and allow a 20% buffer.
Frequently asked questions
Several factors reduce real-world upload speed: Wi-Fi overhead (use wired ethernet where possible), ISP throttling, server limitations at the destination, TCP protocol overhead (~3–5%), and network congestion. Your "up to X Mbps" ISP plan is also a ceiling, not a guarantee. Run a speed test just before uploading to get an accurate number.
Mbps (megabits per second) is used for internet speeds; MBps (megabytes per second) is used for file-transfer rates. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, 10 Mbps = 1.25 MBps. ISPs advertise in Mbps; download managers and operating systems often display progress in MB/s — so a "10 Mbps" connection shows ~1.25 MB/s in your file manager.
Run a free speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net — always check the upload speed, not just download. Upload speeds are usually much lower than download speeds on home broadband (asymmetric connections). For example, a plan advertised as '100 Mbps' may only offer 10–20 Mbps upload.
