How does this calculator work?
Traffic density k = flow q ÷ speed v (vehicles per km or mile). Average spacing = 1 000 m ÷ density per lane. A freeway with 1 200 veh/h flow and 80 km/h speed has k = 15 veh/km total; with 2 lanes that is 7.5 veh/km per lane (LOS B). Higher density → shorter spacing → risk of congestion.

How this is calculated
Traffic flow theory is built on three macroscopic variables: flow (q, vehicles per hour), space-mean speed (v, km/h or mph), and density (k, vehicles per km or mile). They are linked by the fundamental equation of traffic flow: k = q / v. If 1,200 vehicles per hour pass a cross-section at an average speed of 80 km/h, the density is 1,200 / 80 = 15 vehicles per km across all lanes combined — or 7.5 vehicles per km per lane for two lanes.
The reciprocal of density gives the average headway (spacing) between vehicles: 1,000 m ÷ density. At 15 veh/km a vehicle has roughly 67 m of road ahead. As density rises and speed falls, spacing shrinks; at some critical density the flow breaks down into stop-and-go congestion.
The Level of Service (LOS) bands shown follow approximate thresholds from the US Highway Capacity Manual (HCM 7th edition) for basic freeway segments, expressed in vehicles per km per lane. LOS A (< 7 veh/km/lane) is free-flow with full driver freedom; LOS E is at or near capacity; LOS F indicates breakdown and queuing. Exact thresholds vary by road type, free-flow speed, and edition of the HCM — use these bands as indicative guidance, not precise engineering limits.
Frequently asked questions
Flow (volume) is a rate measured at a fixed point — vehicles passing per hour. Density is a spatial measure — vehicles present on a stretch of road at an instant. They are related by speed: density = flow ÷ speed. A freeway can have the same flow at two very different densities (high speed with wide spacing, or slow speed with bumper-to-bumper queuing).
Space-mean speed is the average speed of all vehicles in a road segment at a given instant (or equivalently, total distance ÷ total travel time). Time-mean speed is the arithmetic average of speeds measured at a fixed point. For the fundamental equation k = q / v, always use space-mean speed — the distinction matters when speeds vary, because the arithmetic average overestimates.
LOS A–F (HCM) describe the quality of traffic flow. A is free flow with no restriction on manoeuvring; B and C are stable flows with some constraint; D approaches instability; E operates at or near capacity; F is forced flow with demand exceeding capacity, causing queues and breakdown. LOS is typically determined from density for freeways and from delay for signalised intersections.
