How does this calculator work?
Overtime at "time and a half" pays 1.5× your regular hourly rate. Multiply regular hours by your rate, overtime hours by 1.5× your rate, then add them together for total pay. For example, 40 regular hours at $20 plus 8 OT hours at $30 equals $1,040.
Formula
How this is calculated
Time-and-a-half means every overtime hour is paid at one and a half times the standard hourly wage. In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires this multiplier for any hours worked beyond 40 in a week; many other countries have similar rules, though the overtime threshold and multiplier may differ — always check your local labour law.
The calculator first computes regular pay (regular hours × rate) and overtime pay (overtime hours × rate × 1.5), then sums them for total pay. The effective hourly rate — total pay divided by total hours — shows your blended average wage for the period, which is always between the regular rate and the overtime rate.
Note that this tool covers the standard 1.5× FLSA multiplier. Double-time (2×) for holidays or extreme hours, shift differentials and employer-specific policies are not included. Consult your employment contract or local labour authority for the exact rules that apply to you.
Frequently asked questions
Time and a half means you are paid 1.5 times your regular hourly rate for each overtime hour worked. For example, if your regular rate is $20/hr, your overtime rate is $30/hr.
Under the federal FLSA, overtime applies to hours worked beyond 40 in a single workweek. Some states (e.g. California) also require daily overtime for hours beyond 8 in a single day — check your state labour laws.
In the US, salaried employees earning below the federal salary threshold (currently $684/week as of 2024) are generally entitled to overtime. Employees above the threshold may be classified as exempt — review the FLSA exemption rules or consult an employment attorney.
