How does this calculator work?
Texas sales tax = 6.25% state (fixed, since 1990) + up to 2% local = 8.25% maximum combined rate. Most major Texas cities (Houston, Dallas, Austin) charge the full 8.25%. Tax amount = price × rate. Texas has no state income tax. Grocery staples and prescription drugs are exempt.
Formula
How this is calculated
Texas imposes a state sales and use tax of 6.25% on most retail sales, leases and rentals of taxable goods, and on certain services. This rate has been in effect since 1990 and is set by the Texas Legislature — it is not editable by local jurisdictions. Texas cities, counties, transit authorities and special purpose districts can each impose additional local sales taxes, but the combined local rate is capped by state law at 2%, making the highest possible combined rate 8.25%.
Most of the largest Texas cities — Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and El Paso — levy the full 2% local rate, reaching the 8.25% combined cap. Smaller municipalities and unincorporated areas charge less; enter your actual local rate (check the Texas Comptroller's website for your specific address). The local rate field is pre-set at 2% to match the most common scenario.
Some goods and services are exempt from Texas sales tax — notable exemptions include most groceries (unprepared food), prescription drugs and medical devices. This calculator applies the entered rate uniformly to the full purchase price; it does not model exemptions or taxable-service thresholds. Texas has no state income tax.
