How does this calculator work?
EU sock size = foot length (cm) × 1.5. UK = EU − 33. US Men = UK + 0.5; US Women = UK + 2. For a 26 cm foot: EU 39, UK 6, US Men 6.5, US Women 8. Results are approximate — brands label socks in ranges because elastic stretches across 2–4 EU sizes.
Formula
How this is calculated
The EU sock size system follows the Paris Point (Mondopoint) convention: one size unit equals two-thirds of a centimetre, so EU size = foot length in cm × 1.5. A 26 cm foot gives EU 39, a 28 cm foot gives EU 42. This is the same scale used for EU shoe sizes; sock manufacturers typically label their products in size ranges (e.g., 39–42) rather than individual numbers because elastic fabric stretches to fit a band of foot lengths.
The UK size is derived by subtracting approximately 33 from the EU size. This offset reflects the different historical origins of the two systems (the British system uses barleycorns: 1 size = 1/3 inch ≈ 8.5 mm, versus the French system's 2/3 cm). US Men's sizes add 0.5 to the UK size; US Women's sizes add approximately 2, following standard shoe conversion offsets applied to socks. These offsets are averages — different brands apply slightly different conversions, especially for performance or compression socks where exact fit is critical.
Measure your foot in the evening when it is at its largest (feet swell slightly during the day). Stand on paper, mark the heel and the tip of the longest toe (usually the big or second toe), and measure between the marks. Measure both feet and use the larger measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Elastic fabric stretches across a range of foot lengths. A sock labelled EU 39–42 is knitted to fit comfortably over any foot in that range. Standardising on ranges (typically 3–4 EU sizes per label) simplifies manufacturing and reduces the number of SKUs retailers need to stock.
Stand barefoot on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall. Mark the tip of your longest toe. Measure from the wall to the mark. Repeat for the other foot and use the larger value. Do this in the afternoon or evening when feet are at their daily maximum size.
Children's EU sizes use the same Paris Point scale, so EU = foot length × 1.5 applies. However, the UK and US children's size systems have different offset rules from adult sizes, so the −33 and +0.5/+2 adjustments do not carry over. For children, refer to the brand's specific size chart.
