How does this calculator work?
Estimated Snap Score ≈ total_sent + total_received + (stories × 5) × (1 + bonus%). At 10 sent + 15 received per day + 3 stories/week over 365 days the score reaches roughly 9,500–10,500 before bonuses. The same activity implies about 38 minutes of daily screen time — useful for digital-wellness awareness.
Formula
How this is calculated
Snapchat's Snap Score is an integer that increases with engagement on the platform. Snapchat has never published the precise algorithm, but extensive community reverse-engineering and partial disclosures suggest the dominant components are: +1 per snap sent, +1 per snap received, and roughly +5 per story posted. Additional undisclosed bonuses apply for Snapchat Spotlight submissions, maintaining streaks, and other engagement actions; the calculator lets you add a percentage bonus to account for these.
From a digital-wellness perspective, the score is a proxy for total engagement volume. The calculator also estimates daily screen time using a community-observed average of about 1.5 minutes per snap (composing or viewing) and 5 minutes per story, giving an annual hours figure that is comparable to screen-time reports from phone operating systems.
The Snap Score formula is reverse-engineered and may change without notice as Snapchat updates its algorithm. Scores of active users in 2024 range from a few thousand for occasional users to tens of millions for power users who have been on the platform since its 2011 launch. This calculator is not affiliated with Snap Inc.
Frequently asked questions
Snapchat's exact algorithm is proprietary and includes factors this calculator cannot observe: bonus points for streaks, Spotlight, group snaps, re-opens, and promotional events. The formula here captures the dominant components, but your real score may be 10–30 % higher if you benefit from many bonus actions.
Receiving and opening snaps contributes to the score (+1 per snap). Simply viewing a story or chatting without a snap does not contribute to the Snap Score according to community observations, though Snapchat has occasionally granted bonus points for specific viewing actions during promotions.
At 10 snaps sent and 15 received per day with 3 stories per week, this calculator estimates roughly 38 minutes of daily Snapchat usage — about 230 hours per year. WHO and mental-health researchers generally recommend keeping recreational social-media use under 1–2 hours per day for adolescents and adults.
