How this is calculated
The silver melt value is the market value of the pure silver an item contains, based on its metal content alone. The calculation has three steps: convert the item's total weight to troy ounces (1 troy oz = 31.1035 g exactly), multiply by the decimal purity to get the net silver content in troy ounces, then multiply by the current spot price per troy ounce.
Common silver purities: fine silver (.999 or .9999) used in modern bullion coins and bars; sterling silver (92.5%) in most jewellery and flatware; coin silver (90%) in pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and half-dollars; .800 silver in many older European pieces. Check for a hallmark — .925, .999, .900 etc. — stamped on the piece. The spot price is updated continuously on the commodities market, so this calculator is designed to accept the current live price.
The melt value is the theoretical intrinsic value, not the price a dealer will pay. Dealers buy at a discount (typically 5–30% below spot melt) to cover overhead and profit.
