How does this calculator work?
EIP-2 paid $600/adult + $600/qualifying child, phasing out at $5 per $100 of AGI above $75k (single), $112.5k (HoH) or $150k (MFJ). Authorized December 2020 and based on 2019 AGI. If you missed it, the Recovery Rebate Credit on the 2020 return was the path to claim it (window now likely closed).
Formula
How this is calculated
The second Economic Impact Payment was authorized by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 (signed December 27, 2020) and issued from late December 2020 through January 2021. Payments were based on the 2019 federal tax return (or 2020 if already filed). The base amount was $600 per eligible adult — $600 for a single filer, $1,200 for a married-filing-jointly couple — plus $600 for each qualifying child under the age of 17 at the end of 2019.
Payments were reduced (phased out) by $5 for every $100 of AGI above the threshold: $75,000 for single and married-filing-separately filers, $112,500 for heads of household, and $150,000 for married filing jointly. The phase-out reduces the entire payment (adult + child components together) until it reaches zero. With no dependents, the zero point for single filers is $87,000; with dependents the cutoff is higher.
This is a historical closed program. If you believe you were eligible but did not receive the payment, you could have claimed it as the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 Form 1040 (filing deadline was extended to October 2021 for this purpose). That claim window has now closed.
Frequently asked questions
The second stimulus (EIP-2) was $600 per eligible adult — not $1,200. The first stimulus (EIP-1, CARES Act) was $1,200 per adult. A third payment (EIP-3, American Rescue Plan, March 2021) was $1,400 per adult. This calculator covers EIP-2 only.
The IRS used the AGI from your most recently filed tax return at the time of processing — typically the 2019 return. If you filed your 2020 return before the IRS processed your EIP-2 in early 2021, the 2020 AGI may have been used. If neither year had a return on file, the IRS used information from Social Security or VA benefit records.
The Recovery Rebate Credit for EIP-2 was claimed on the 2020 federal tax return (Form 1040, line 30). The standard deadline for 2020 returns was April 2021, extended for some filers. The IRS generally has a 3-year window after the original due date to process refund claims. For most filers that window has now closed — contact the IRS or a tax professional for your specific situation.
