Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

The SAT composite score = Math score + EBRW score, each on a 200–800 scale, giving a 400–1600 total. The 2023 national mean is approximately 1060 (~50th percentile). A 1200 is approximately the 74th percentile; 1400 is approximately the 94th. Use College Board's official report for exact percentiles.

Formula
Composite = Math + EBRW (each 200–800) • Range: 400–1600
How this is calculated

The current SAT (redesigned 2016) consists of two sections: Math (200–800) and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, or EBRW (200–800). The composite score is simply their sum, giving a range of 400–1600. Each section score is the result of a process called equating, which converts your raw correct-answer count into a scaled score adjusted for the specific test form's difficulty — raw-to-scaled tables vary by administration and are released by the College Board after each test date.

This calculator takes your already-scaled section scores and computes the composite. The national percentile estimates are based on approximate 2023 College Board data (most recent publicly available cohort) and are linearly interpolated between published data points. The national mean for the class of 2023 was approximately 1 060, with a standard deviation around 200. Percentile values above the 99th are not shown separately because the College Board reports all top scores as "99+" in aggregate.

For exact percentile ranks, use the official College Board Score Report, which provides your precise nationally representative sample (NRS) percentile for that specific test administration. College admissions offices consider both section scores and the composite; many also look at subscores within each section. Middle 50% score ranges for selective colleges typically begin at 1 400–1 500+ composite.

Frequently asked questions

The SAT composite is the simple sum of the Math section score (200–800) and the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section score (200–800), giving a total range of 400–1600. There is no weighting — both sections contribute equally to the composite.

A score at or above the 75th percentile (approximately 1200+) is generally considered competitive. Highly selective universities typically admit students with composites of 1450–1580. The national average for the class of 2023 was approximately 1060. A "good" score depends on your target schools — check the middle 50% range published by each college.

No — the raw-to-scaled conversion (equating) is test-specific and released by the College Board after each administration. This calculator works with scaled section scores that you already have from your official score report. If you have taken a practice test, use College Board's official scoring tables for that specific practice test.
