Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Revenue equals selling price times units sold; gross profit equals revenue minus total cost; margin equals profit divided by revenue times 100; markup equals profit divided by cost times 100. Enter price, cost and units to see your full sales breakdown.

Formula
Revenue = price × units • Gross profit = Revenue − COGS • Margin = Profit ÷ Revenue × 100
How this is calculated

Revenue is the number of units sold multiplied by the selling price per unit. The total cost of goods sold (COGS) is the unit cost multiplied by the same quantity. Gross profit is the difference — what remains before operating expenses such as salaries, rent, marketing or taxes are deducted. This is also called the gross margin in dollar terms.

Profit margin expresses gross profit as a percentage of revenue — the standard metric for comparing products across different price points and industries. Markup expresses the same profit as a percentage of cost, which is how manufacturers and wholesalers typically price from a known cost base. The two are mathematically related: margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup); markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin).

This calculator covers only the gross level. It does not include fixed overheads, variable operating costs, tax, or the cost of returns and shrinkage. To find your net operating profit, subtract fixed costs from the gross profit shown here.

Frequently asked questions

Profit margin is gross profit divided by revenue (selling price). Markup is gross profit divided by cost. A 50% markup produces a 33.3% margin. Retailers usually talk in margins; manufacturers and wholesalers usually talk in markup.

Rearrange the margin formula: selling price = cost ÷ (1 − target margin). To reach a 40% margin on a $30 item, set the price to $30 ÷ 0.60 = $50.

No — all prices are treated as exclusive of tax. If you need to include VAT, add the tax rate on top of the selling price for customer-facing quotes, but enter the ex-tax price here to analyse your margin correctly.
