How does this calculator work?
RV monthly payment = (price − down) × r × (1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1), where r is monthly rate and n total months. RV loans carry higher rates than auto loans — typically 7–14% APR — with terms of 10–20 years. A $60,000 RV with $12,000 down at 9.5% over 15 years costs about $499/month and $41,800 in total interest. Covers principal and interest only.
Formula
How this is calculated
The amount you borrow (principal P) is the RV purchase price minus your down payment. The lender quotes a nominal annual percentage rate (APR); dividing by 12 converts it to the monthly rate r, and multiplying the loan term in years by 12 gives the number of monthly payments n. The standard amortisation formula P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1) produces the constant monthly instalment that repays the loan in exactly n payments, with early payments weighted toward interest and later payments weighted toward principal.
RV loans are typically secured by the vehicle as collateral, but they are treated more like recreational or luxury items than primary transportation. As a result, lenders typically charge 1–4 percentage points more than an equivalent auto loan. Rates as of 2025 commonly range from about 7% to 14% for good-to-excellent credit, with terms of 10–20 years for Class A and B motorhomes and 5–15 years for towable trailers. Longer terms substantially reduce the monthly payment but dramatically increase total interest paid.
This calculator covers principal and interest only. It does not include RV insurance (often $1,000–$3,000 per year), registration, extended warranty, storage fees, campsite costs or maintenance — all of which are material parts of the true cost of RV ownership.
Frequently asked questions
As of 2025, rates for well-qualified borrowers generally range from 7% to 12% APR for new RVs and 9% to 15% for used. Rates depend on credit score, loan term, RV type (motorised vs towable) and the lender. Credit unions and online lenders often offer lower rates than dealership financing.
New motorhomes (Class A, B, C) can typically be financed for 10–20 years; travel trailers and fifth-wheels for 10–15 years; smaller pop-ups for 5–10 years. Most lenders cap loans at 20 years and require the RV to be below a certain age at loan maturity.
In the United States, if the RV qualifies as a second home (it must have sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities), the loan interest may be deductible as mortgage interest on Schedule A for taxpayers who itemise. Tax treatment varies by country and individual circumstances — consult a tax adviser.
