How does this calculator work?
Living room: subtract 45 cm (18") from each room dimension for the margin. Dining room: add 61 cm (24") to each table dimension. Bedroom: add 50 cm (18") to each side and the foot of the bed. The result is your recommended rug size; the calculator also shows the nearest standard retail size.
Formula
How this is calculated
Interior designers use different guidelines for each room type, all aimed at making the space feel balanced. In a living room, a rug should leave a consistent border of bare floor — typically 45–50 cm (about 18 inches) — around its perimeter. This keeps the room grounded without making the rug look too small for the space. If the room is large, aim for the rug to cover at least 55% of the floor area.
In a dining room the priority is chair clearance: chairs need to stay on the rug even when pulled back. The standard recommendation is to extend the rug at least 61 cm (24 inches) beyond the table on all four sides, which means rug dimensions are table length + 122 cm by table width + 122 cm. Check the result against standard sizes — common dining rugs are 270 × 360 cm (9 × 12 ft) or 300 × 365 cm (10 × 12 ft).
For a bedroom, the rug typically sits under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending outward so there is a soft landing when you step out on both sides and at the foot. The guideline is to add at least 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) on each side and at the foot. A 270 × 365 cm (9 × 12 ft) rug suits most queen-size beds; a 300 × 365 cm (10 × 12 ft) covers king-size beds comfortably.
Frequently asked questions
Buying one that is too small. A rug that floats in the centre of the room without reaching any furniture looks like a postage stamp on the floor. Use the 18-inch border rule for living rooms: the rug should extend to within 45 cm of each wall.
For living rooms, having all front legs on the rug is the most popular approach — it connects the seating area without needing a very large rug. All legs on looks the most cohesive but requires a bigger rug. All legs off is least recommended as the rug appears disconnected.
A typical 6-person rectangular table is about 180 × 90 cm (6 × 3 ft). Adding 61 cm on each side gives a rug of roughly 300 × 215 cm — a 270 × 365 cm (9 × 12 ft) or 240 × 300 cm (8 × 10 ft) rug usually works depending on chair depth.
