How does this calculator work?
Multiply room area (sq ft) by target foot-candles (15 for a bedroom, 40 for a kitchen) to get total lumens. Divide by lumens per fixture and round up. Space lights at ceiling height ÷ 2 apart, and offset from walls by ceiling height ÷ 4. A 15×12 ft living room with 800-lm fixtures needs about 3–4 can lights.

How this is calculated
Recessed lighting is sized using foot-candles (FC) — the illumination level on the work or living surface. Different rooms have different needs: a bedroom is comfortable at 10–20 FC, a kitchen needs 30–50 FC for safe food prep, and a bathroom vanity may need 50–70 FC. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IESNA) publishes recommended levels that this calculator uses as defaults; your designer may specify higher levels for accent or task lighting.
Once you have the target foot-candles, multiply by the room area in square feet to get the total lumens needed. Divide by the lumens each fixture delivers (check the bulb packaging — common 6-inch LED recessed fixtures produce 650–1,000 lm; 4-inch fixtures produce 400–650 lm) and round up to whole fixtures. The result is the number of lights for uniform ambient illumination.
For spacing, the traditional rule of thumb is: place lights apart by half the ceiling height (e.g., 4.5 ft apart for a 9 ft ceiling), and offset the first row from walls by one-quarter of the ceiling height. This gives an even wash across the ceiling. In practice, also consider the beam angle of your chosen fixture — a narrow 15° spot creates pools of light; a wide 60° flood provides broader, more even coverage. Dimmers are highly recommended for living spaces.
