How does this calculator work?
Rats need at least 2 sq ft (1858 cm²) of floor space each and a cage at least 18 in (45.7 cm) tall. For two rats, the floor must be at least 4 sq ft (≈3720 cm²). These are minimums — larger cages with multiple levels are strongly preferred. Rats must be housed in pairs or groups for their social well-being.
Formula
How this is calculated
Rats are active, social animals that need sufficient space to move, explore, and express natural behaviours. The most widely cited standard — used by the ASPCA and many rat welfare organisations — recommends a minimum of 2 square feet (approximately 1858 cm²) of floor space per rat, with no cage smaller than 2 sq ft total. The minimum recommended height is 18 inches (45.7 cm) to allow climbing, which is an important enrichment behaviour for rats.
The calculator multiplies the number of rats by 2 sq ft to find the minimum required floor area, then compares that to the cage's actual floor area (length × width). It also checks whether the cage height meets the 18-inch minimum. Both checks must pass for the cage to be considered adequate.
These are minimum guidelines, not ideal conditions. Larger cages are always better: more space reduces stress, territorial conflict, and boredom. Multi-level cages with ramps and platforms can increase usable living space even when the footprint is small; levels are counted here as bonus enrichment, not as replacement for floor area. Some organisations recommend 2.5 sq ft or more per rat as a more comfortable standard.
Frequently asked questions
The widely accepted minimum is 2 square feet (about 1858 cm²) of floor space per rat. A cage for two rats should therefore have at least 4 sq ft (≈ 3720 cm²) of floor area. More space is always better for the animals' well-being.
Yes. Rats are natural climbers and need vertical space for enrichment. The recommended minimum height is 18 inches (45.7 cm). Taller cages with multiple levels, ramps, and hammocks provide important physical and mental stimulation.
Cage size is only one factor. Rats are highly social animals and should generally be kept in same-sex pairs or groups. A single rat, no matter how large its cage, will suffer from loneliness. Always pair or group rats unless a vet advises otherwise for medical reasons.
