This calculator answers the simplest goal-setting question in running: if I improve by X percent, what time does that give me and how fast do I have to run? The target time is the current time scaled down by the improvement percentage — for example, cutting a 55-minute 10K by 5% gives a target of 52:15, which requires a pace of 5:13 per kilometre, compared to the current 5:30 per kilometre.
The "time to save" is simply the difference between the current and target times. The "pace improvement" shows how many seconds per kilometre faster you need to run on every kilometre — useful for setting training intervals and tempo run targets.
The formula assumes a consistent even pace across the race. In practice, improvement comes from a combination of increased aerobic fitness (higher VO2max), better running economy (less oxygen per km at a given pace), and improved race-day pacing strategy.
