Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Rabbit coat colour follows Mendelian inheritance. At the A locus, agouti (A_) is dominant over self (aa); at the B locus, black (B_) dominates chocolate (bb). Enter two parent genotypes to predict offspring ratios — for example, Aa × Aa yields 75 % agouti and 25 % self, independent of the B locus result.

Formula
P(phenotype) = P(A_) × P(B_); P(X_ in offspring) = 1 − P(x from P1) × P(x from P2)
How this is calculated

Rabbit coat colour is determined by several gene pairs (loci). This calculator covers the two most fundamental: the A locus (agouti/self pattern) and the B locus (black/chocolate base). At the A locus, the agouti allele (A) is dominant — rabbits with at least one A show the wild-type ticked-fur agouti pattern, while aa rabbits are self-coloured (a single uniform shade). At the B locus, the black allele (B) is dominant over the chocolate allele (b), which shifts all eumelanin from black to brown.

Each parent contributes one allele per locus to each offspring (Mendel's law of segregation). A homozygous parent (AA or aa) always passes the same allele; a heterozygous parent (Aa) passes each allele with 50 % probability. The calculator combines the two loci independently (Mendel's law of independent assortment), multiplying the per-locus probabilities to get four phenotype combinations: Agouti (A_, B_), Cinnamon (A_, bb), Black (aa, B_) and Chocolate (aa, bb).

This model omits the D locus (dilute/dense — blue and lilac tones), the E locus (extension — yellow/red), and the C locus (albinism). Real breeding outcomes are probabilistic; use these percentages as expectations over many litters, not a guarantee for any single kit.

Frequently asked questions

Agouti (A_) rabbits have ticked fur in which each hair has alternating light and dark bands, giving a wild-looking coat. Self (aa) rabbits lack this ticking and show a single uniform colour from root to tip.

Yes — if both parents carry a hidden chocolate allele (Bb × Bb), 25 % of kits will be chocolate (bb), even though neither parent shows chocolate colouring.

Rabbit coat colour involves at least five major loci (A, B, C, D, E). The A and B loci determine the basic pattern and base colour, making them the most commonly needed for hobby breeders. Adding D (dilute), E (extension) and C (albino) would multiply the combinations further and typically requires pedigree test-mating records to determine carrier status.
