Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Total blocks = sum of k² for each level k, where each level's side = base − 2·(k−1)·step. A 7-wide pyramid with step 1 per side needs 7²+5²+3²+1² = 84 blocks over 4 levels. Increase the step for fewer, wider tiers; the total drops significantly.

Formula
Total blocks = Σ (side_k)² where side_k = base − 2·(k−1)·step, for k = 1 to number of levels
How this is calculated

A square stepped pyramid is built in horizontal layers. The bottom layer (level 1) is a full square of base × base blocks. Each successive level up is a smaller square, reduced by the "step" amount on each side — so the full width shrinks by 2 × step per level. The process repeats until the remaining side would drop to zero or below.

For a classic style (step = 1), a 7-block-wide base gives levels of 7×7 = 49, 5×5 = 25, 3×3 = 9, and 1×1 = 1 — totalling 84 blocks across 4 levels. Mathematically this is the sum of squares of odd integers from 1 to n, which equals n(n+1)(2n+1)/6 for step = 1 and odd n. With a larger step, fewer levels are needed and the total drops sharply.

The calculator is also useful for planning physical models, LEGO or Minecraft builds, garden stone features, or any project where a tiered square layout is needed. Blocks are assumed to be identical cubes; no mortar, offsets, or structural considerations are included.

Frequently asked questions

With the default step of 1 per side, a 5-wide base gives levels 5×5=25, 3×3=9, 1×1=1 — a total of 35 blocks over 3 levels.

It is the number of blocks removed from each side of the square at every level. A step of 1 means each level is 2 blocks narrower in both width and depth. A step of 2 means each level is 4 blocks narrower, giving fewer but more dramatic tiers.

The Great Pyramid is a true smooth-sided pyramid, not a stepped one. Ancient step pyramids like the Pyramid of Djoser in Egypt do follow this logic. This calculator models the stepped construction, not the cased exterior of later smooth pyramids.
