How does this calculator work?
Your PTE Academic overall score is simply the average of your Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing scores, each on a 10–90 scale. Enter all four to see the rounded overall and the equivalent CEFR level (A1 through C2) — no proprietary algorithm is needed for this final step.
Formula
How this is calculated
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic reports scores on a 10–90 scale for four communicative skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Pearson’s algorithm weighs individual micro-skill item scores to produce each section score; the overall score displayed on score reports is the arithmetic mean of those four section scores, rounded to the nearest integer.
This calculator reproduces that final-step averaging. It does not replicate the internal item-level scoring (which is machine-learning-based and proprietary), so the result here matches the section average that appears on your score report once you have your four section scores in hand.
CEFR equivalence follows Pearson’s published mapping (10–29 → A1, 30–42 → A2, 43–58 → B1, 59–75 → B2, 76–84 → C1, 85–90 → C2). Many universities and immigration bodies set minimum overall and section score thresholds — check the specific requirements for your institution or visa programme, as these differ from the CEFR mapping.
Frequently asked questions
It is the arithmetic mean of your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), each reported on a 10–90 scale, rounded to the nearest whole number.
Pearson maps a PTE overall of 65 to approximately IELTS 7.0. A score of 59–75 corresponds to CEFR B2 (upper-intermediate), which most B2 universities and visa programmes recognise as equivalent to an IELTS 6.5–7.0.
Yes. Because the overall is the mean of four sections, raising a low section score by 10 points raises the overall by 2.5 points. Focusing on your weakest skill is the most efficient strategy.
