How does this calculator work?
Privacy fence materials = ⌈length ÷ post spacing⌉ bays, that many + 1 posts, 2–3 rails per fenced bay (2 for ≤6 ft, 3 for taller), and ⌈(spacing×12) ÷ board width⌉ pickets per fenced bay. One 60 lb concrete bag per post. Adjust editable unit prices to your local lumber yard rates.
Formula
How this is calculated
A board-on-board privacy fence consists of posts (set in concrete footings), horizontal rails (top and bottom for a 6 ft fence; three for taller), and vertical pickets or boards nailed to the rails. The calculator divides the total fence length by the post spacing to get the number of bays (sections between posts), then adds one post for the far end. Gate sections are excluded from rail and picket counts because the gate itself provides those members.
Pickets per bay are computed as ⌈(post spacing in inches) ÷ board width⌉ — this assumes boards are placed flush with no gap, which is typical for privacy fences. If you want a gap or overlap, adjust the board width field accordingly. Post length is calculated as fence height + 2 ft: a rule of thumb for setting posts at roughly one-third of their total length in the ground for stability; in loose soil or for fences over 8 ft, consider deeper burial or concrete piers.
Unit prices default to typical 2025 US DIY retail values and are editable — lumber and concrete prices vary significantly by region and change with supply conditions. Labour (digging, setting posts, nailing boards) typically adds 30–100% to material cost and is not included here.
Frequently asked questions
Standard post spacing for privacy fences is 6 to 8 feet on-centre. Pre-made panels often come in 8 ft widths, so 8 ft spacing is common for panel installations. For board-on-board construction you can use 6 ft spacing for added rigidity, especially in windy areas or for tall fences. Closer spacing means more posts and material cost but a sturdier fence.
The standard rule is to bury at least one-third of the post's total length — so a 6 ft fence needs 8 ft posts (set 2 ft deep), and an 8 ft fence needs 12 ft posts (set 4 ft deep). In frost-prone climates, set posts below the frost line (typically 3–4 ft in northern US states) to prevent heaving. The calculator uses height + 2 ft as a conservative rule of thumb.
Permit requirements vary by municipality. Many cities require a permit for fences over 4–6 ft tall, for fences along property lines, or near utilities and streets. Some HOAs also have height and material restrictions. Check with your local building department and HOA before construction — this calculator provides materials and cost estimates only, not regulatory guidance.
