Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Price per round = total price ÷ number of rounds. A $24.99 box of 50 rounds costs $0.50 per round; a $34.99 box of 100 rounds costs $0.35 per round — the larger box saves $0.15 per shot. Always include shipping and fees for an honest comparison.

Formula
Price per round = Total price ÷ Number of rounds
How this is calculated

Ammunition is sold in boxes of 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 and other counts. Because box sizes vary, comparing sticker prices directly is misleading — a $49.99 box of 100 rounds is cheaper per shot than a $24.99 box of 50 rounds even though it costs twice as much up front. Dividing the total price by the round count gives the cost per round, the correct unit for comparison.

The calculator also shows cost per 100 rounds, per 500 rounds, and per 1,000 rounds — the last being the standard bulk-buy benchmark used in the shooting community. These are simply the per-round price multiplied by the respective count, and let you instantly estimate range-session or annual shooting budgets.

Prices and availability vary by retailer, region and current demand. This calculator uses the price you enter and makes no assumptions about taxes, shipping, or hazardous-materials fees, which can add meaningfully to the effective cost per round when buying online.

Frequently asked questions

A 20-round box at $15.99 and a 50-round box at $34.99 have very different sticker prices, but per-round they cost $0.80 and $0.70 respectively — the bigger box is cheaper. Only the per-round price lets you compare them directly.

Prices vary widely by calibre, manufacturer, and market conditions. Common pistol calibres like 9mm have ranged from under $0.20 to over $0.60 per round in recent years; rifle rounds and specialty loads are generally more expensive. Always check current retail prices.

Yes, for an accurate total cost per round, add any shipping, hazmat, or dealer-transfer fees to the box price before calculating. Online savings can disappear once shipping is factored in.
