How does this calculator work?
Price per linear foot = Total cost ÷ Linear feet. For example, $1,200 for 120 ft = $10/LF = $32.81/metre. Enter total cost and length to get the per-foot rate, and optionally price a specific target length. Works for flooring, lumber, fencing, pipe and any linear material.
Formula
How this is calculated
A linear foot is simply one foot of length measured in a straight line — no width or height is implied. The price per linear foot (LF) is the most common unit rate for materials sold by length: hardwood and engineered flooring, lumber, fencing, moulding, trim, guttering, pipe, countertop edging, and fabric widths. To find the rate, divide the total cost by the number of linear feet purchased.
Once you have the per-foot rate, you can price any other quantity by multiplying: cost for a given length = price per LF × length. This is particularly useful when comparing quotes that cover different lengths, or when you know the LF price from a catalog and need to budget for a specific run.
This calculator also converts the rate to price per linear metre, since many international suppliers and architects quote in metric. The conversion is exact: 1 foot = 0.3048 metres (international foot by definition), so price per metre = price per foot ÷ 0.3048. Note that price per linear foot is a one-dimensional measure — it does not account for material width or thickness. For area-based materials (e.g. carpet sold by the square yard, tiles by the square metre) use a price-per-unit-area calculator instead.
Frequently asked questions
A linear foot is one foot of length with no width measurement. A square foot is a two-dimensional area: 1 ft × 1 ft = 1 sq ft. Materials like lumber, pipe and trim are priced per linear foot because their width is fixed; flooring and fabric may be sold per linear foot but the price implies a standard roll width, so you need to confirm the width to find the area.
Divide price per linear foot by 0.3048. For example, $10/LF ÷ 0.3048 ≈ $32.81 per metre. Conversely, multiply price per metre by 0.3048 to get price per foot.
Lumber thicker than 1 inch or wider than standard widths is priced by board feet (a volume measure: 1 bd ft = 1 ft × 1 ft × 1 in). Dimensional lumber (2×4, 2×6, etc.) sold at hardware stores is typically priced per linear foot at a stated cross-section. Check whether your quote is per LF or per board foot before comparing.
