Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Subtract what you have from the evolution cost to get candies needed. Each catch with a Pinap Berry gives 6 candies; without gives 3. Buddy walking yields 1 candy per 1, 3, or 5 km depending on species. The calculator shows catches needed and km to walk for any combination.

Formula
Candies needed = evolution cost − current candy • Catches = ⌈needed ÷ candies per catch⌉ • Buddy km = needed × km per candy
How this is calculated

Pokémon GO candy is species-specific: catching, transferring, or walking with a species all yield candy for that line only. Each catch awards 3 candies base; using a Pinap Berry doubles the catch reward to 6. Transferring a Pokémon to the Professor gives 1 candy. Buddy walking awards 1 candy per 1, 3, or 5 km depending on the species.

Evolution costs in 2024 are fixed per species: most common species cost 25–50 candies, mid-tier evolutions cost 100, and rare cases (Magikarp→Gyarados, Swablu→Altaria) cost 400. Some Pokémon also require a special evolution item in addition to candy. The calculator covers only the candy requirement.

For power-ups, candy costs scale with the Pokémon's current CP level and are not covered here. Use this tool specifically for planning your next evolution by choosing the most efficient farming method — catching is usually fastest if the species is available in the wild, while buddy walking is the main option for rare or regionally-exclusive Pokémon.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — transferring any Pokémon to Professor Willow gives 1 candy for its evolutionary line. This is useful for clearing box space while making progress toward an evolution goal.

Use Pinap Berries on every catch to double the candy reward (3→6 per catch). During Community Days the featured Pokémon spawns massively, making it easy to farm hundreds of candies in a few hours. You can also use Silver Pinap Berries for 6 candies plus a better catch rate.

Rare Candies are universal and can be converted to any species' candy from the item menu. They are not tracked here — the calculator focuses on the most common farming methods (catches and buddy walking).
