How does this calculator work?
Multiply your weekly item counts by per-item gram weights (bag ≈ 6 g, bottle ≈ 15 g, container ≈ 25 g, wrapper ≈ 8 g), sum, multiply by 52 and divide by 1000 to get kg/year. The global single-use plastic average is roughly 50 kg per person per year (OECD 2022).
Formula
How this is calculated
The calculator multiplies your weekly count of each item type by a representative per-item mass, sums all categories to get a weekly gram total, then scales to an annual figure (× 52 weeks ÷ 1000 g/kg). Item masses used are approximate median values from OECD and Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2022) data: a thin LDPE shopping bag ≈ 6 g, a 500 mL PET bottle ≈ 15 g, a takeaway box ≈ 25 g, a snack wrapper or sachet ≈ 8 g, a disposable straw ≈ 0.5 g. Your actual items may weigh more or less — thicker bags, larger bottles and clam-shell containers all weigh more than these defaults.
The result is compared against the OECD (2022) estimate of roughly 50 kg per person per year of mismanaged single-use plastic waste in high-income countries. That figure varies widely by country and lifestyle — some estimates put average consumption (not just mismanaged waste) at 99+ kg per year. This calculator intentionally covers only items you handle directly; it omits plastic embedded in manufactured goods, appliances or building materials.
To reduce your footprint: switching to reusable bags eliminates ~300 g/year per bag swap; choosing tap water over bottled removes ~780 g/year per bottle eliminated weekly.
Frequently asked questions
The item weights are population-average estimates and will not match every product. Heavier items (1-litre bottles, rigid containers) increase your actual footprint beyond the default. Use the result as an order-of-magnitude guide and compare categories to see where your impact is largest.
Yes — the calculator tracks the plastic you touch, regardless of end-of-life. Even recycled plastic has a production and transport footprint, and globally only about 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled (UNEP 2023). Reduction at source is more impactful than recycling alone.
The OECD (2022) estimates roughly 50 kg per person per year of plastic waste in high-income countries. In lower-income nations with limited waste infrastructure, the figure for mismanaged plastic is often higher despite lower consumption.
