How this is calculated
Both the US customary and Imperial (UK) systems define a gallon as exactly 8 pints — so the conversion ratio is identical regardless of which system you use. Despite this shared ratio, the actual volumes differ: a US gallon is 3.785 litres (231 cubic inches) while an Imperial gallon is 4.546 litres (277.4 cubic inches), because the underlying pints have different sizes.
