How does this calculator work?
Percentage point change = New% − Old% (simple subtraction). Relative % change = (New% − Old%) ÷ Old% × 100. A rate rising from 5% to 7% is +2 pp but +40% relative change — completely different numbers describing the same move.

How this is calculated
A percentage point is the arithmetic difference between two percentages. If an interest rate rises from 5% to 7%, it has increased by 2 percentage points — a simple subtraction, independent of the original value. This is fundamentally different from saying the rate increased by 40% (the relative change: 2 ÷ 5 × 100 = 40%).
The confusion between percentage points and percentage change is one of the most common numerical errors in reporting. "The unemployment rate fell from 8% to 6%" is a 2 percentage point drop, but a 25% relative decrease. Media reports often omit "percentage points" and just say "percent," which can be misleading. The two measures answer different questions: percentage points tell you the raw arithmetic shift; relative percentage change tells you how large that shift is compared to the original rate.
This calculator computes both. The relative change is undefined when the original rate is zero (division by zero), in which case only the percentage point change is reported.
