    Component a — completion %

    clamp((22 ÷ 35 − 0.3) × 5, 0, 2.375) = 1.6429
  2. 2

Component b — yards per attempt

    clamp((280 ÷ 35 − 3) × 0.25, 0, 2.375) = 1.25
  3. 3

    Component c — TD rate

    clamp(2 ÷ 35 × 20, 0, 2.375) = 1.1429

    Component d — interception rate

    clamp(2.375 − 1 ÷ 35 × 25, 0, 2.375) = 1.6607
Lower interception rate yields a higher d component.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

NFL passer rating combines four stats: completion %, yards per attempt, TD rate, and interception rate. Each is scaled to 0–2.375, summed, divided by 6, and multiplied by 100. Maximum is 158.3. A rating ≥ 100 is elite; 70–84 is average for a starting quarterback.

Formula
Rating = [(a + b + c + d) / 6] × 100 where a = clamp((Comp/Att − 0.3) × 5, 0, 2.375), b = clamp((Yds/Att − 3) × 0.25, 0, 2.375), c = clamp(TD/Att × 20, 0, 2.375), d = clamp(2.375 − INT/Att × 25, 0, 2.375)
How this is calculated

The NFL passer rating formula was adopted in 1973 and remains the league's official measure of passing efficiency. It combines four rate stats — completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown rate and interception rate — each converted to a 0–2.375 scale by linear scaling and clamping. The four components are summed, divided by six and multiplied by 100 to give a result between 0 and 158.3.

The magic numbers come from the historical averages and extreme thresholds set in the 1970s: a 30% completion rate maps to 0, a 77.5% completion rate or higher maps to the maximum; 3 yards per attempt maps to 0, 12.5+ maps to max; 0 TDs map to 0, 11.875%+ maps to max; 0 interceptions gives the maximum d component of 2.375, while a 9.5%+ interception rate maps to 0. Clamping ensures that an exceptional performance in one category cannot push the total above 158.3.

The formula has known limitations: it was calibrated on 1970s statistics, rewards completion percentage regardless of depth of target, and ignores rushing yards, sacks and drops. The NFL also uses a supplemental metric called Total QBR (ESPN) for a more holistic measure, but the traditional passer rating is still the official league stat.

Frequently asked questions

A rating above 100 is considered elite. 85–99 is above average, 70–84 is around average, and below 70 is below average. A perfect game (158.3) requires completing 77.5%+ of attempts at 12.5+ yards each, with a TD-to-attempt ratio of ≥11.875% and zero interceptions.

The maximum is 158.3 (repeating). Each of the four components is capped at 2.375; (4 × 2.375) / 6 × 100 = 158.333…. It is achievable with a very efficient game but is rare.

No. Total QBR (ESPN) is a separate proprietary metric that accounts for clutch situations, opponent strength, dropped passes, and yards after catch. Traditional passer rating is the official NFL formula used in record books. Both are useful but measure different aspects of performance.
